Information design services are not usually needed for simple web sites because the information design needed is usually obvious. For a complex site information design is absolutely necessary.

In the context of Web site design, information design is the part of the process which determines

- The structure of the web site
- The structure of the information as it presented on the page
- How dense & long the information on a page can be before a new page or some form of division is required.

Effective information design means enhanced communication in part because the audience is not overwhelmed.

Dividing information up gives the user the space in which to consider. It is the space that lets them make decisions about what to do next.

Information design is an inherently creative or communicative act. It is making sense out of information.

Here are some musical quotes that relate to this idea

“Don’t play what’s there, play what’s not there.”
- Miles Davis

“Music is the space between the notes.”
- Claude Debussy

“It’s taken me all my life to learn what not to play.”
- Dizzy Gilespie
